Residents of Old Fadama, popularly called Sodom and Gomorrah is calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to build, what they describe as “nice structure “for the residents to move in before the Assembly starts its decongestion exercise in the area.
The Mayor of Accra Alfred Okoe Vanderpuje has announced plans to start the relocation exercise end of February to help decongest the area.
Speaking in an interview with Gold news, leader of Old Fadama Residents , George Ndikibi says that the AMA must show a human face in its bid to evacuate.
“The AMA must build a very nice structure for us to move in before they start the evacuation. For them to tell us they want to evacuate people of 95, 000 population , is unfair.” He lamented.
George Ndikibi maintained that the AMA cannot just evacuate about 9,500 people living at Sodom and Gomorrah, asking where the AMA intends for them to re-locate..
“The problem is that, this project has been ongoing for a long time; they built a market without building a residence for the people, are you saying the people with their family over 4,000 should live in the market? “ , He asked.
Leader of the Residents of Old Fadama, George Ndikibi indicated that the AMA cannot wake up one day and destroy the whole area adding that forced evacuation is not the solution.
“I remember last year they called us for a meeting and discussed with residents to move 100 meters away from the Lagoon for the machines to do the dredging, which we did. The space we provided is still there, we have done what they asked us to do . I don’t think we have any problem with the AMA. They have to show a human face .” He bemoaned .
